What is a superyacht?

A superyacht, also known as a megayacht or luxury yacht is a motor or sailing yacht of more than 24m (or 80ft) in length although some superyachts can be in excess of 100m in length.

Superyachts can be built from all manner of construction materials, the most popular being aluminium, steel, carbon, GRP and wood.  A 50m superyacht on the second hand market would cost (on average) at least £8 million, it would then cost roughly 10% -15% of the superyachts value to run her for the year (including crew costs etc).

To give you an idea, to charter a superyacht per day as a guest you could be looking at spending in excess of £35,000 per day.

You will find superyachts in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the US, these being the more traditional cruising areas but you will also find superyachts in Australia, New Zealand, the Baltic, Thailand and Indonesia amongst other places.

You will find all of the creature comforts you would expect from the best hotels and sometimes more.  Large superyachts commonly have Jacuzzi's, hot tubs, gyms as well as the usual dining rooms, saloons, studies and bedrooms (cabins).  Most will have an array of water based toy such as jet ski's, water ski's, RIB's and some will even have a submarine and helicopter.
